Tips For a Successful Back To School

August and September mean just one thing for the parents of children. Back to school. Just the phrase brings both happiness and apprehension. Parents and children can simultaneously look forward to a new school year and be nervous about starting. A new school year means new teachers, new friends, and new learning. It is important to start the school year off on the right foot. Here are several tips that will help to ensure that both you and your child get a successful start to the new school year.

First of all, be prepared for the new school year. If your child's school hosts a meet the teacher or back to school night, do your best to attend. This will give you an opportunity to meet your child's teacher. It also allows you to introduce yourself and your child. This allows your child's teacher to put a name to your face if you should need to communicate with him or her in the days to come.

In most cases the teacher will be present to meet with you and communicate important information. Many teachers choose to hand out a beginning of the year newsletter at this time that contains information about rules and class procedures.

In addition to meeting your child's teacher before the beginning of the school year, it is also important to prepare your children for the new school year. After an entire summer of staying up late and playing all day it can be difficult for children to adjust to the rigors of a new school schedule. Get ready by helping your children to unwind and go to bed earlier. Review some of the concepts that they had difficulty with the previous year or things that you feel they may have forgotten over the summer. Purchase any needed supplies or school clothes, and give your children a chance to get excited about the new school year.

As you begin the new school year be sure to take some time to communicate directly you're your child's teacher. If your child has specific needs or difficulties, be sure that the teacher is aware of them so that he or she can make any necessary accommodations. Remember that you and the teacher both want what is best for your child. Communicating on this level and in these terms will help to keep both of you focused on helping your child learn.

Lastly, try to be patient. It is not unusual for both teachers and children to have a difficult time for the first month or so of school. A new school year brings many different demands. Your children may come home complaining about too much homework or too strict of a teacher. Try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and encourage your child to try and adjust to the new teacher's style. With a little bit of time it is likely that everything will smooth out and within a few short months your child will be learning successfully.
